Abstract<\/h2>\n

From October to November 2020 the Philippines was struck by eight\u00a0<\/span>typhoons, two of which caused widespread flooding, utilities\u00a0<\/span>interruptions, property destruction, and loss of life. How did these\u00a0<\/span>severe weather conditions affect online learning participation of\u00a0<\/span>students pursuing their undergraduate and graduate studies in the\u00a0<\/span>midst of the COVID-19 pandemic? We used CausalImpact analysis to\u00a0<\/span>explore September 2020 to January 2021 data collected from the Moodle\u00a0<\/span>Learning Management System data of one university in the Philippines.\u00a0<\/span>We found that overall student online participation was significantly\u00a0<\/span>negatively affected by typhoons. Bio<\/h2>\n

Ma. Mercedes T. Rodrigo is a professor at the Department of\u00a0<\/span>Information Systems and Computer Science of the Ateneo de Manila\u00a0<\/span>University. She is also the head of the Ateneo Laboratory for the\u00a0<\/span>Learning Sciences. Her areas of specialization include technology in\u00a0<\/span>education, artificial intelligence in education, affective computing.\u00a0<\/span>She is currently working on three research projects: the first is on\u00a0<\/span>the use of Minecraft for STEM education, a collaboration with\u00a0<\/span>researchers from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champagne.\u00a0 The\u00a0<\/span>second is on the development of a mobile-based game for teaching about\u00a0<\/span>the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The third is on the\u00a0<\/span>analysis of learning management systems data during the COVID-19\u00a0<\/span>pandemic.
