In this presentation I motivate by examples that professional communities need learning support beyond the commodity level. Learning analytics in such settings is more than simple assessment strategies but need a deep understanding of interactions between learners and systems, learner and learning resources as well as learners among each others.<\/p>\n Such a perspective is delivered by community information systems serving the needs of mobile communities. The meaningful combination of quantitative and qualitative assessment strategies supports the understanding of learner goals, learning processes and community reflection. Ralf Klamma has diploma, doctoral and habilitation degrees all in computer science from RWTH Aachen University. Currently, he leads the community information systems research group at the information systems and databases chair, RWTH Aachen University. He is vice-coordinator of the FP7 ICT Integrating Project ROLE and principal investigator in the FP7 projects TEL-MAP and GALA as well as the LLL project TeLLNet. He chaired all JTEL summer schools, EC-TEL and ICWL. He serves as associate editor for international journals like IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies (ToLT), Social Network Analysis and Mining (SNAM), and IJTEL.
