UNESCO Chair seminar on «Technologies for online education»

December 2nd, 2014

The next seminar of the UNESCO Chair on Scalable Digital Education for All will be held on December 2 at the Leganés campus of the Carlos III University of Madrid. This seminar will focus on the use of web technologies in the context of digital education.

Specifically, a very topical topic will be addressed, such as the teaching-learning of programming through visual tools, both for children and adolescents (as a step prior to their arrival at university), and for adults (especially those who have a business idea and want to develop applications themselves in a simple way). To do this, José Domínguez (MIT) will present us with success stories in the use of a specific visual tool, APP Inventor, exploring how through games or mobile applications we can encourage creativity and computational thinking in students.

On the other hand, we must not forget that the role of technology and specifically of the Web in today’s society and education is largely due to the existence of organizations that promote its development, such as the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). ). Thanks to the standards promoted by the W3C, our browsers are more powerful and functional, facilitating daily actions such as accessing the news or holding a videoconference. Antonio Olmo Titos is part of the W3C systems team and will talk to us about the W3C HTML5 standard and the role that this standard plays in scalable education and MOOCs.
