Abstract
MOOCs are becoming the main way to effectively deliver educational contents online. In fact, lately a number of open source platforms have been developed to facilitate the MOOC creators in publishing their courses online. However, few research efforts focused on the instruments made available to build a MOOC from scratch, helping also the less tech prone educators to grasp the benefit of online education. This paper presents how the different tools integrated in FARE, the Free Architecture for Remote Education, can be exploited to build the fundamental elements of any MOOC. FARE, a completely free and open source web platform, helps the educators throughout all the creation processes, from the search of the suitable contents to the publication on a dedicated delivery platform. An overview of such tools, together with a descriptive workflow of the approach, is presented. The preliminary users of the platform are currently testing its functionalities and they are providing insightful feedback to improve its usability. The final ambition is to achieve a completely integrated experience so that also the less technologically expert educators may benefit from it.
Bio
Leonardo Favario received the M.Sc. in Computer Engineering in 2014, and his PhD degree in Control and Computer Engineering in 2018, both from Politecnico di Torino. He currently is a post-doc in the Control and Computer Engineering Department at the Politecnico di Torino, Italy. His primary research interests include e-learning systems and technologies, with particular attention to the use of multimedia in such contexts.
