Anant Agarwal, edX CEO, named Doctor Honoris Causa by UC3M
Anant Agarwal, full professor at Massachussetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and edX CEO, one of the most important MOOCs platforms created by MIT and Harvard, has been named -on February 16, 2018- Doctor Honoris Causa by Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M). During the academic ceremony, at Getafe’s Campus, professor Eric S. Maskin, Nobel Prize in Economics 2007, was granted with the same honor.
Anant Agarwal has been nominated for this honorary degree by the Department of Telematic Engineering at UC3M. Carlos Delgado Kloos, vice-rector of Strategy and Digital Education of this institution and eMadrid coordinator, pronounced his tribute. The current edX CEO has worked as director of CSAIL and professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at MIT. He has co-founded several companies such as Virtual Machine Works and Tilera Corporation, which created the multi-core Tile processor. He won the Maurice Wilkes Award for Computer Systems Architecture, and the Smullin and Jamieson Teaching Awards from MIT. In 2011, Scientific American magazine selected his work in organic computing as one of the “Ten ideas that will change the world”. And he reached the Top 15 of educational innovators in 2012, according to Forbes magazine.
EdX, the platform founded by MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and Harvary, and in which UC3M participates as a partner since 2014, is internationally renowned in the field of digital education, offering an extensive range of courses taken by millions of people around the world. During the last academic year, UC3M offered its first MOOCs on this platform and had more than 166.000 registered students (among all of the courses) with the majority coming from USA, United Kingdom, Canada, India, and Brazil for the courses in english; and from Spain, Mexico, Peru and Colombia for the courses in spanish.
