«Examples of tools that supports learning analytics in MOOCs»

Abstract

The Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) became part of the edX Consortium in 2014 (https://www.edx.org/school/uamx). Since then, more than 15 MOOCs (Massive Open On-line Courses) have been created and offered free of charge and different researchs have been developed in the area of learning analytics, based on the MOOCs of the UAM in edX. In this talk we will see the following tools:

• Open-DLAs: an Open Dashboard for Learning Analytics. Where descriptive analytical techniques have been applied to discover how learning is taking place.
• edX-MAS+: Model Analyzer System for edX MOOCs. Predictive analytics techniques have been applied to create predictive models and anticipate what may happen.
• edX-WS: Warning System for edX MOOCs. Where prescriptive analytical techniques have been applied to detect strategies that can facilitate learning.
• edX-CAS: Content Analyser System for edX MOOCs. Web application that serves as a tool for the analysis of textual content in MOOC courses.

Bio

Dr. Ruth Cobos Pérez is associated professor in the Department of Computer Engineering of the UAM and researcher in the Interactive Tools and Applications Group (GHIA). She has been a computer engineer since 1998 and has a PhD in Computer Engineering since 2003 from UAM. She has made three postdoctoral stays (18 months, 2004-2006) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). She has completed two research stays (August, 2015 and 2016) at the University of Southampton (UoS, U.K.). In 2014 she was delegate of Educational Technologies at the UAM. During this period, she launched the MOOCs of the UAM in EdX, at the head of the UAMx office. (http://www.uam.es/uamx). Dr. Cobos has participated in and directed research projects in the areas of Computer Supported Collaborative Work, Social Media, Education, e-Learning, Blended Learning, Educational Technologies, Data Mining, Learning Analytics, MOOCs and SPOCs.
