Abstract
The widespread adoption of Learning Analytics (LA) and Education Data Mining (EDM) has stalled somewhat recently, and in some cases has even reversed following concerns from governments, stakeholders, and civil rights groups. In this ongoing debate, fears and realities are often indistinctly mixed, giving rise to an atmosphere of uncertainty among the potential beneficiaries of Learning Analytics, as well as doubts among institutional managers, who aim to innovate support for learning in their institution. by implementing data and analytics with an eye toward improving student success. In this talk, we are going to analyze the most common points of view and the proposals made by the Los Angeles community to solve them. We will conclude the talk with an overview of the existing tools for policy making to facilitate a reliable implementation of Learning Analytics in educational institutions.
Bio
Hendrik Drachsler is Professor of Technology-Enhanced Learning at the Zuyd University of Applied Sciences and Learning Analytics at the Welten Institute of the Open University of the Netherlands. His research areas include Learning Analytics, personalization technologies, Recommender Systems, educational data, mobile devices and their applications in the fields of Technology-Enhanced Learning and Health 2.0. Hendrik chairs the EATEL SIG dataTEL and the Dutch national umbrella organization SIG Learning Analitycs SURF. He is also elected to the Society for Learning Analytics Research (SoLAR).
