eMadrid seminar on «Free Software and Freedom in Education»

Abstract

This talk with cover the ethical issue of free software, and why schools must make sure to teach exclusively free software. More generally it will cover the issue of freedom in regard to works that are useful for education: textbooks, reference works and scholarly publications.

Bio

Dr. Richard Stallman launched the free software movement in 1983 and the development of the GNU operating system (www.gnu.org) in 1984. GNU is free software: everyone is free to copy and distribute it, as well as to make changes of greater or lesser magnitude. The GNU/Linux system, basically the GNU operating system with Linux added, is currently used in tens of millions of computers. Stallman has received the “Grace Hopper” from the ACM (ACM Grace Hopper Award), a grant from the MacArthur Foundation, the “Pioneer” of the Electronic Frontier Foundation Award, and the Takeda Award for Social/Economic, as well as several honorary doctorates. He has also been inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame.
